How to Motivate Yourself to Achieve Your Goals

We all have those days when we just don’t feel like doing anything.  Nothing wrong with that as long as those days don’t turn into weeks.  Sometimes we need to find a way to get ourselves out of the funk and back on track.  It’s important to learn ways to help you find that get-up and go.  It could be as easy as taking a walk or doing some stretches.  Did you know that the color GREEN gives you a boost in motivation and energy?  Well, it does and researchers found that surrounding yourself with a bit of green provides a boost in motivation and also that a glimpse of the color green sparks creativity. Those are just a few ways how to motivate yourself to achieve your goals.

What is Motivation?

Motivation is that inner feeling that pushes us towards achieving our goals. It’s what keeps you

going and jumping over the hurdles you encounter.  Without it, you would give up each time those hurdles appear.  When starting something new that you are excited about you will be full of good motivation.  When being told by your boss that you will get fired if a job isn’t done is bad motivation but you will get the job done to avoid being fired. Of course, we all prefer the good kind of motivation and doing something you enjoy and are passionate about makes it easier to achieve your goal.

Is it All in your Head?

Don’t over think it just do it.

Have you ever had someone tell you to stop feeling that way it’s all in your head?  Well, guess what? They are correct! Your mind can be working against your motivation and you need to learn how to change your thought patterns.

Negative Motivation Patterns: Hopelessness, Helplessness, Overwhelming Yourself, Jumping to Conclusions, Self-labeling, Undervaluing the Rewards, Perfectionism, Fear of Failure, Fear of Success, Fear of Disapproval or Criticism, Coercion and Resentment, Low Frustration Tolerance, Guilt, and Self-blame. All of these negative patterns can be overcome by learning ways to avoid them.

Techniques to increase motivation:

  • Set reasonable goals.
  • Imagine yourself reaching those goals.
  • Create a list of reasons why it’s important to you to reach your goals.
  • Identify obstacles and problem solve in advance.
  • Decide on how you will reward yourself when you reach your goals.
  • Get back to basics when you get off track.
  • Make sure to get enough sleep.

Stay Focused & Stay Positive

Staying focused and thinking positively will lead to being motivated. Try to stay positive by creating exciting objectives that you aim to reach in the future. You can not change the past but you can make a brighter future by living for the moment. Surround yourself with motivated like-minded people and it’s sure to rub off.

“Positive thinking will let you do everything better than negative thinking will.”
Zig Ziglar

Tips to stay focused and positive:

  • Set daily and weekly priorities.
  • Stay focused on your goals.
  • Stay organized.
  • Include at least one enjoyable and fun activity into your day.
  • Find ways that enable you to connect with motivated and positive people.
  • Read inspirational stories.
  • Keep track of your accomplishments.

Don’t let fear kill your motivation. In order to be motivated to do something, you need to believe that your efforts will lead to your goal.  When you start thinking negative thoughts replace them with positive ones. This does take practice, start by recognizing those negative thoughts before they get a hold of you.  Remind yourself of the benefits and satisfaction you will get once you’re done with that task at hand.
“I can accept failure, but I can’t accept not trying.”
– Michael Jordan
